"Then I must tell you." My master was suddenly very close to his brutish cousin; he seemed somehow taller, his equivalent in height. His dark eyes gazed directly into the other's watery ones, which squirmed in their sockets like a fish upon a spear. The king's son quailed and shrank from him; his soldiers and attendants shifted uneasily. The sun's warmth dimmed; the courtyard grew cloudy. One or two of the soldiers had goose pimples on their legs. "You will leave him alone," Ptolemy said, his voice slow and clear. "He is my slave, and I say he deserves no punishment. Leave with your lackeys and return to your wine vats. Your presence here disturbs the scholars and brings no credit on our family. Your insinuations likewise. Do you understand?" The important things to know about Ptolemy are as follows: 1. He is brilliant. 2. He looks about eighty on a good day. 3. He's fourteen years old. He was a boy magician remembered best for a rather dry text (The Eye of Ptolemy) on the mechanics of summoning demons and outlandish tales known as The Apocrypha. As far as outlandish tales go, however, his were far more rooted in truth than most; despite the disbelief of the majority of the magical community since, he truly did successfully journey to the Other Place (the natural home of djinn, afrits, marids, and the rest) and back. Such a fantastic trip was not without its price. Upon returning to his body, he found that it had begun to die when his soul left it; he was unable to walk or even stand and could barely use his arms. His death came soon after he returned to Alexandria, when his paranoid cousin (also a Ptolemy) had djinn sent to kill him and his own djinn. They succeeded in destroying Affa, Methys, Penrenutet, and Teti. Finally, a wounded Bartimaeus and a dying Ptolemy were left. Rather than allow the djinni to perish with him, Ptolemy used his dying breaths to return him to the Other Place, that he might live. Since arriving in the City, Ptolemy has begun to complete the work he left behind him at his death. His hope is to finish the book he had fervently wished to be known for and to find a way to return it to his world of origin. It might allow others to achieve his long-term goal of seeing humans and spirits working together for a common end, an ideal that has held fast in Ptolemy's mind and heart since he first began to learn magic. He is treating this place as a second chance at a life cut short, and the City seems to be willing to help him a little bit; since arriving, he has found himself able to speak, understand, and write in English as well as Egyptian, Greek, and Latin, thus allowing him to communicate with other citizens. His body is still aged and weakened, but not to the same extent it was in his lifetime. On his better days, he can support himself on his hands and knees and crawl (slowly) short distances, and on some occasions, his legs will allow him to assume a standing position for very short periods of time. While he still requires a great deal of assistance, it is an improvement, and he hopes that he will continue to improve. When he is done with his life's work, Ptolemy plans to focus on the City. While he is most interested in its varied effects on its citizens, particularly Rekhyt and Queezle, he wishes to make a broad study of the place as well. And, on an even broader scope, he wants to learn about the places other citizens come from; he saw little of the world outside Alexandria during his lifetime, and since he won't be going anywhere but the City any time soon, it's an opportunity for him to experience different ways of life without the trouble of leaving his seat. In preparing for these goals, he has begun to question his fellow citizens on everything from their favourite curse days to their former lives outside the City. Not everything makes sense to him--having lived and died thousands of years before the majority of the people trapped in the City, he's a tad out of the loop--but he's of the opinion that as long as he continues to ask the right questions, he'll eventually understand. He's also started to make friends, both from his own world (though from a vastly different time period) and from universes far removed from his experiences. |
| Quote taken from Bartimaeus' POV in Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud. Ptolemy is property of the aforementioned Jonathan Stroud, Miramax Books, etc, etc. I don't claim him as my own, and I don't claim to truly be him; I just like supposing about the dear boy in my spare time Years taken from calculations and the book. Dates pretty much pulled out of my ass--to get used to using a very different calendar, Ptolemy decided to try and figure out when his birth and death dates were. |
